Background of the Study:
Poverty and mental health are inextricably linked, particularly in rural settings where economic hardship is pervasive. In Katsina State, many rural communities experience chronic poverty, which significantly impacts mental health outcomes. The stresses associated with financial insecurity, unemployment, and limited access to social services contribute to the development of mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions (Oluwaseun, 2023). Rural populations often face additional challenges, including isolation, lack of access to mental health services, and cultural stigma surrounding mental illness.
In Katsina State, the relationship between poverty and mental health is further compounded by low educational levels and limited awareness of mental health issues. Economic hardship forces individuals to prioritize basic survival needs over psychological well-being, leading to a neglect of mental health care. Furthermore, traditional beliefs and the social stigma attached to mental disorders often discourage individuals from seeking help, perpetuating a cycle of suffering and marginalization (Ibrahim, 2024).
Recent research indicates that poverty can exacerbate the onset and severity of mental health conditions, while also hindering recovery by limiting access to support and treatment. Addressing mental health in rural areas requires integrated approaches that consider both the economic and social dimensions of poverty. This study aims to assess the impact of poverty on mental health among rural populations in Katsina State by evaluating the prevalence of mental health disorders, exploring the underlying socio-economic determinants, and identifying the barriers to accessing mental health care (Fatima, 2025). The findings will be essential for informing policies and designing interventions that target the mental health needs of impoverished communities in rural Katsina.
Statement of the Problem :
In rural areas of Katsina State, poverty has a profound and detrimental impact on mental health. The persistent economic hardships faced by rural populations lead to high levels of stress, depression, and anxiety, which are often exacerbated by social isolation and limited access to mental health services. Financial insecurity, inadequate living conditions, and a lack of social support contribute significantly to the burden of mental health disorders among these communities (Umar, 2023). Despite the critical need for mental health care, stigma and cultural barriers frequently prevent individuals from seeking help, further worsening the situation.
The scarcity of mental health professionals and inadequate healthcare infrastructure in rural Katsina State compounds these challenges, leaving many individuals without access to effective treatment. Furthermore, there is a dearth of targeted mental health interventions that address the unique challenges faced by impoverished rural communities. The lack of comprehensive research on the intersection of poverty and mental health in this region hinders the development of effective policies and programs.
This study seeks to systematically investigate the impact of poverty on mental health among rural populations in Katsina State. By identifying the key economic and social determinants of mental health disorders and assessing the barriers to care, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving mental health outcomes in impoverished rural communities.
